"The O'Possum"

After leaving L.A. and returning to NYC I safely thought I'd seen my last Possum. The ugly beasts had always scared me when they'd show up every night in my Cali backyard. So imagine my surprise when they showed up on the streets of Brooklyn... in my front garden!! I tried to give a tip of the hat to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" this time out. Don't know if I've succeeded, but trying sure is fun.

Worked with my good friend Dave Fuscellaro, AD @ L.A.'s Thirty Sixty Advertising on Branding and Logo art for The Water Grill a short while ago. The artwork is finally rolling out in the restaurant and I couldn't be happier with the results. Here's a visual of the freshly-painted window signage. The artwork we created is featured on everything from menus to coasters and in-store signage. They've even used the art on inlaid wooden tables and counters. Thanks Dave and Thirty Sixty!!

Every so often a new player will show up and sit in with the regulars. Jonathan joined a really good set and played extremely well. The arrows around his head are symbolic of how he kept up every time the direction of the music changed.

A New Comic Strip!

Here's the new strip for the October 1st Issue of The Red Hook Star-Revue and a walk-through of the steps taken to create it...

All of the strips start out with a basic idea, with a set-up and a pay-off. I try to do some quick roughs just to get the characters and props figured out...
At this early stage all I'm concerned with are the elements I'll need to include and the actions that will help tell the story. Moving forward everything can and usually does change.

Then I lay out the panels and begin roughing in the story...

Next up is the final pencil art where I will move things around so they fit properly in the panels. I usually 'warm up' for the inking by tackling one of the easiest panels first...

Inks are then completed and all pencil lines are erased...
I purposely used some old, slightly yellowed bond paper for this one because I wanted a nice warm tone to the overall strip.

The color stage is where all of the real fun begins. I usually start by figuring out what colors the characters will be and then work on the palette for the backgrounds based on those choices. My main concern for this one was that the autumn leaves would read powerfully against everything else because they were an important part of the gag.
And a couple of hours later it's all done!

While working exclusively with Disney's Food Division for the first few years on staff I got the chance to create new and exciting concepts for their licensees. One of my favorite projects was working with PEZ on a new way to present their Princess line. Even as a young boy I never liked the 'Head on a Stick' design approach that PEZ always used and I thought it looked particularly jarring with the more realistic looking Princess group. During a conference call with PEZ I noticed a bust of Beethoven that a co-worker had on her desk, and suggested that I thought that type of approach would work well for the Princess line. I made a few sketches and sent them off to PEZ. The next day we had their approval and began the line.
In the time since I've seen Star Trek and Bratz sets using the same approach. So I guess I helped PEZ re-invent themselves in some small way.

As an Illustrator in the Art Studio at Saatchi & Saatchi I was able to turn out a set of presentation drawings like this in about a day and a half. The assignments were always fast-paced and fun, and I had the opportunity to work with some of the best Art Directors in the Ad Business.

Postage stamp designs from '98-2000, for the U.S. Postal Service. The Consumer Products division designed the first one that featured Bugs. I produced these three stamps, as well as all of the 'First Day of Issue' art for the complete series with painter Hector Martinez. The fifth and last one was bounced back to WB Consumer Products after the Stores closed, and it was just a group of Style Guide art used in a "That's All Folks!" concept. As a young man I worked at the Post Office in one of my very first jobs, so this was a very sweet and special assignment for me.

I think I was a better cartoonist when I worked in advertising. There's an 'in-breeding' that comes from working in the cartoon industry that weakens you from being exposed to the same ground and sources over an over.

This was one of my favorite assignments at WB. I was asked to design a set of stacking mugs that were shaped like a rocket ship, with the capsule on top as a sugar bowl. At Warner we were always told that Egghead, Sniffles, Baby Face, Ollie Owl and Ralph Philips weren't good for product because people preferred Bugs, Daffy, Taz, Tweety and Marvin. And we couldn't even think about using The Do-Do, because they felt that no one knew him. So when I designed this one I had to include all of them! I even brought back the original Bob Clampett-designed Tweety for the occasion. I'm glad I got at least one chance to feature these classic characters on an item.

Who shot the better Jessica Rabbit?

I've always liked this Playboy cover from '88. But the recent portrait by Ryan Astamendi is really something else.

The difference between these two images is like night and day. The Playboy cover merely places the subject, as if to say that all the model had to do was 'show up'. No storytelling or emotion at all. And the blank expression on the model's face is more like a catalogue
photo than an impression of a character as iconic as Jessica Rabbit. In short, they phoned it in. It seems the only details they have gotten right are the gown and gloves. But they too fall short as they're too slavishly an echo of the film.
Plus the perspective of her bustline is off!
Ryan's shot, on the other hand is a great piece of storytelling. Jessica looks like the torch song siren she is in the film. And the sideways glance she gives at the audience is engaging and sensual. The bare stage setting frames the figure perfectly and the old-fashioned microphone, that Ryan bought especially for the shoot brings it
all together perfectly.
Check out Ry's photography by using the link in the 'Link-O-Rama' section on the right, there's lots of great portrait work there, and even a few Disney Princesses that I think you'll find enchanting.

Here's a photo from '98, taken at the then-new Warner Brothers Studio Stores HQ in Burbank. My Creative VP, Chris Hacker asked me to design two chairs for the reception area. One was based on Pepe Le Pew, as shown here, and the other one was based on Bugs Bunny. I'd forgotten about this assignment until last friday, when I visited some friends at WB Consumer Products. I was happy to see that they're still in use in their main reception area, and they still look new!

I found these storyboard frames from a late '80s Chrysler pitch while cleaning out my files today. The only reason they remain in good condition is because I used them as portfolio pieces. I was responsible for the layout, pencils and inks. And my then GEM Studio co-worker, Tom Fluharty handled the color rendering. I'm glad these images survived, I always felt proud of this project, and I was very happy with the outcome of this collaboration.
Update: After looking at these frames for a while I've come to the conclusion that these are not the original boards that Tom and I produced together. They're sample frames that I made for my portfolio based on the originals. We never had artwork returned to us from Ad Agencies, unless it was for revisions.

When I was in my teens cartooning and music were my passions. Sometimes, if I was lucky, I'd be able to combine the two. This is a caricature I made of my friend Peter De Stefano. Peter was an amazing songwriter and guitarist, and still is. I made this sketch straight onto the paper with a cheap felt pen in '71. If you look hard you can see the beginnings of a pencil sketch of a fist and arm of another run-of-the-mill Superhero. I'm glad I used this sheet of paper for a drawing of Peter instead.

1969... Blind Faith

What began as the most anticipated 'super-group' of all time fizzled to an end quickly. Clapton, Winwood, Baker and Gretsch just couldn't pull it all together. They made a lackluster LP and played some concerts, but in-fighting and ego's tore them apart within a year. More was less.
This one is more of an abstract cartoon than the rest of the '69 sketches, which is probably a reflection of my feelings about this group. Plus the fact that the likenesses were drawn from memory. I've heard Clapton perform "Presence of the Lord" a few times and prefer his vocal on it over the wailing Steve Winwood original recording.
I hope to get one more piece done for this series.

After saying how I probably wouldn't post anything new for a while, here it is... a post created especially for the blog.

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I'd create comic strips and stories that would reflect what was going on in my life. Both the realistic and the exaggerated. Usually on a daily basis.
For the first time in a long, long time I felt the need to re-visit that approach. I hope you enjoy it. At the time I first started exploring this type of storytelling I was very much influenced by Robert Crumb. I still am.

Holiday Gift Guide...

Well, the Holidays are breathing down our necks again. So I thought I'd perform a Public Service and make a few gift suggestions of the graphic narrative kind. These books will be gladly accepted by anyone interested in comic books and graphic novels and good, clear stotytelling.

First up is "Strange Suspense: The Steve Ditko Archives Vol. 1" edited by Blake Bell and designed by Adam Grano. It is in my opinion one of the most beautiful reprint books I've ever read. This first volume starts off with Mr. Ditko's very first comic book stories, with crisp clear reproductions on every page of every story.

Next up is David Mazzuchelli's graphic novel "Asterios Polyp". Every visual aspect in this book is as abstract as I've ever seen in a graphic novel, quite different from any previous work I've ever seen by Mr. Mazzuchelli as well. But it reads in a beautifully flowing way. Graphic language is tailored to each individual character's motivations and morphs along to compliment the content and setting of every scene.

My next suggestion is Darwyn Cooke's "Parker" pot-boiler. A gritty crime story that is served up in elegant illustrations and biting prose. This is an adaptation of novelist Richard Stark's early '60s novel "The Hunter". If you're familiar with Mr. Cooke's comic book and graphic novel work you already have an idea of what you're in for. If you've never seen his work before this is a perfect book to be initiated with.

We end with what I think is the greatest collection of comic book stories aimed at children that you'll ever find in one place. "The Toon Treasury of Classic Children's Comics" compiled by Art Spiegelman & Francoise Mouly is an amazing collection of stories. It's an all-ages assortment that entertains on many levels. Don't miss it.

This one's for my good friend, Brian Postman.

I met Brian during the GEM Studio days and liked him instantly. Happily, Brian and I have stayed friends, despite the years and distances that have presented themselves. Long-time friendships take work. And collaboration. Some of the happiest days of my life were when Brian and I feverishly knocked out a few pages of the "Honeymooners Christmas Special" comic book in my Brooklyn studio, along with the help of Win Mortimer's layout pencils, and Susan Sykes and Ted Camut's rendering. We were filling the holes on a 48 page issue, penciling, inking and coloring a carload of pages before sending them out the door.
We made the deadline. Weeks ahead, if I remember correctly.

And it's funny because the first time I became aware of Brian and his artwork was a few years earlier, during his run on "Spider-Woman." Especially the "Daddy Longlegs" issue.
I thought he was British.

Imagine my surprise when he showed up at GEM with a New York accent?

More importantly, I thought that he was a good storyteller.
Plenty of others have agreed, he's been an in-demand story board artist for two decades.

One day, out of the blue Scholastic Books asked, at the recommendation of Warner Brothers, if I'd like to illustrate a Scooby-Doo children's book. I'd never done one before so I jumped at the chance. This is the only book I illustrated for Scholastic. I also worked on two still-born books for Golden Books, back when they were having problems, as well as six for Chicago-based publisher Publications International.
It was fun to draw the dog again.

--but thirty-eight years ago, at nineteen years of age I drew this pencil sketch, possibly for use as a portfolio piece.
Looking at it now I'm a bit surprised by its real estate and the way it's composed; with Revolver as the firm foundation and Yellow Sub as an extra added attraction on top, a bit of fluff actually. But by featuring a solo Paul Mc Cartney image set slightly above the other Beatles' "Let It Be" images suggests that he'd firmly established his solo career, and that I was highly in favor of it.
I still think that Paul's first solo effort is one of the best records ever made. It's loose and sketchy. And "Maybe I'm Amazed" still holds up.
