Jack Davis art!--

June is halfway to the great cartoonist's eighty fourth birthday and I wanted to make a celebration out of it. So here are some of his Promo pieces from the late '80s. The original printed pieces were in the 'index card' format, hence the folds in the scans. They're reproduced here twice up from their original printed size.

Lucky you!

Oh, you flaterer you.

Actually... I fell in love with Jack Davis' art the first time I saw it on a Topp's bubble-gum card. Yep, that's what they called 'em way back then. Bubble gum cards. So, of course he's gonna influence me.

Always.

Out of all of the E.C. comic book artists, Jack Davis is the one I think most highly of. He's unsurpassable. And deservedly so.

Yes, I am old enough to remember and have used the phrase bubble gum card.

It is hard to believe that there was a time when kids would actually buy the package as much for the 3/4 inch by 2 1/2 inch stick of pink gum (with powdered sugar) as much as for the cards themselves.

This guy is one of my heroes. Thanks for posting this stuff Vince. Hey.
How about treating us to a Davis tribute piece from your own hand?

I tell you what, Jimbo-- I'll just post a few more Jack Davis masterworks for now, and in December, to celebrate Jack's 84th birthday I'll do a tribute piece. Glad to know you appreciate this genius, I think he's the best.

I associate Jack Davis with Mad Magazine. My brothers and I loved Mad; I would pore over those beautiful drawings in every issue, wondering how could anyone be so good? Jack Davis was everywhere those days-what a whopping talent. Thanks for sharing-and I can't believe you have some originals!

No, I don't have any Davis originals, Kim. I wish I did. These scans are from printed pieces. Thanks for visiting.

Ha! I loved the WNBC AM radio promo with Imus and Howard Stern - it’s funny because it’s spot on but I bet it would make Stern cringe!

Also like the Gabe Kaplan illo.

Yeah, Peej, there were a few hidden gems in this post. The nerd in the phonebooth below is Howard Stern as well. There's a caricature of Robin too! I love Jack Davis and can't get enough of him, so I thought this posting of his promo material from the late '80s was a good idea. All budding cartoonists need to see these illustrations. They're like going to Cartoon University.
