Never made it to the Ball...

Here is a sampling of a design program I created and pitched. The idea was a spoof on the old "soap opera" romance comic strips from the '50s.

For a while it looked like Europe was going to use these images on product. Then Stationery got involved and asked me to direct a color version, as shown here.

The visuals were intended to be B & W, so I've included one of them.

If anyone in Europe has ever seen these visuals, please let me know.

Great drawings in the tradition of Willy Elder and Wallace Wood. Love it!

They're just great, I wanna tattoo one on my back.
The backgrounds have the right balance between detail and style and the inks is splendid. Great job.
Wonderful illustrations and great sense of humor. That would have told you that they would not have made it into the shops.

Thanks for the comments and observations, Oscar, Max & Lea.
Oscar- I still can't get over "Lydia", what a masterpiece!
Max- Your latest series of museum studies makes my jaw drop every time your page opens. Love them.
Lea- Your color pallette is mesmerising. I've never seen anyone use color the way you do.

These are Fantastic! Why didn't they USE THESE??

Vince M said...

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. I hope you're doing well.

Hey Ry. Not sure why they weren't used. They were pretty keen on it in the UK for a while, and the Stationery team seemed excited about it too.
And then... nothing.

I thought it would be a good way to get the Girl's teen market, and possibly 20-30 year olds as well. Especially since we lose girls' interest in these properties as soon as they turn seven.

I've got three more images, I'll post them in a few days.

They may have been used somewhere, Kim. You never know. I've never gotten a straight answer when I inquired about it.
I hope they were used, Lord knows that a lot of money was spent on this project.

Vince,

They’re excellent! Was any thought given to using the combination of images and word balloons to do a series of somewhat funny cards (a la Hallmark)?

Vince M said...

Thanks for the kind words, Peter.

Yes, PJ-- they were created for greeting cards, tee shirts, demim jackets, vinyl handbags, lunch boxes, wall art, stickers. etc...

But most importantly-- they were concepted for the teens through late twenties age group. For young girls who need more of a statement than five Princess's standing around, looking off into the distance.
